Characterization of the production system of local swine in Curimataú Paraibano micro area

Abstract

The objective with this study was to characterize the production of local swine and the social-economy practice in Curimataú Paraibano micro area. Data were obtained applying a questionnaire to 215 farmers in the cities: Casserengue, Cuité, Barra of Santa Rosa, Remígio and Tacima, involving variables analyzed by descriptive statistics and analysis of multiple correspondence, using the SAS statistical package. It was observed that 16%, 22.3%, 7%, 4.6%, 2.3% and 0.5% of the farmers had 0.03 at 1; 1.5 at 5; 5.5 at 10; 11 at 50; 50.5 at 85 and, 368 ha respectively, with a mean of 7 ha/property. 91.6% of the producers practiced extensive system with contention; 5.1% semi-extensive, and 3.3% produce loosened. Total of 1.100 swine were computed, representing 74.7%, 14.5%, 7.9% and 2.9% of the producers with one to five, six to 10, 11 to 19 and, 22 to 71 pigs, respectively. In relation to the time of permanence in the section/production of swine, 66.6% represented those production of more than five years, demonstrating experience in the area. The importance of the social economy of this production was verified in the potential for income generation, because 11.8%, 44.3%, 43.4% and 0.5% have those animals as first, second, third or the only economical importance, respectively. Besides serving as provision of animal protein, as a traditional culture and preservation of resources genetic swine.

Olimpia Lima Silva Filha, Universidade Estadual de Alagoas / Escola Superior do Sertão

Olímpia Lima Silva Filha, filha de Edvaldo Magalhães Silva (in memorian) e Olímpia Lima Silva (in memorian), nascida em 13 de junho de 1973. Graduou-se em Zootecnia pela Universidade Estadual do Sudoeste da Bahia (2001), em Itapetinga/BA. Concluiu o mestrado em Zootecnia, com concentração em Nutrição Animal, pela Universidade Federal Rural de Pernambuco (2002), em Recife/PE. Especializou-se em Conservación y Utilización de Las Razas de Animales Domésticos en Sistemas de Explotación Tradicionales pela Universidade de Córdoba, Espanha (2005). Ingressando no doutorado em Zootecnia, com concentração na área de Produção Animal, pela Universidade Federal da Paraíba, Programa de Doutorado Integrado em Zootecnia em 2004, concluindo em 2006. Atualmente é Professora Assistente da Universidade Estadual de Alagoas - UNEAL / Escola Superior do Sertão - ESSER.
