Piglet medium weight, weight and length of newborns, and rates of stillborn and death of swine in Alagoas State

Abstract

The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of environmental factors on average body weight of newborn piglets – AWP, litter weight - LW, litter size – LS, stillborn and mortality rates of swine. A total of 935 data were obtained from piglets borne during 2002-2004. To analyze the AWP and LW, the effects of month and year of birth, matrix pedigree and the covariables LS and males percentage were included the effects of month and year of birth, matrix pedigree and the covariables LS and males percentage. The effects of month and year of birth and female pedigree were also included in LS analyze. The effects of month and year of birth and matrix pedigree were not significant for AWP and LW. Male percentage and LS were significant to AWP and LW. AWP reduced with the increasing of LS and increased with the male percentage rate. LW increased according to the increasing of LW and male percentage. The effects included to evaluate LS were significant. In 2004 were registered the biggest LS. The Penarlan pedigree showed the highest average to LS. The average rates of stillborn and mortality were 3.02 and 5.53 %, respectively.
