Abstract

Leptospirosis is a zoonosis of economic and public health importance because of the damages caused. The experiment was aimed to demonstrate the importance of studies in equines, regarding its susceptibility to many serovars of Leptospira interrogans. Anti-leptospira agglutinin occurrence in equine serum demonstrates the evidence of the infection exposition risk by Leptospira interrogans. Equines sera with clinical symptoms for leptospirosis were tested against 18 serovars of L. interrogans by microscopical seroagglutination test to verify anti-leptospiras agglutinin presence. From one hundred and six samples of serumsanguineous proceeding from a farm in Itagibá city, Bahia, 23% seropositivity was gotten. The most frequent serovars were Icterohaemorrhagiae followed by Pyrogenes, Wolffi, Castellonis, Autumnalis and hardjo. By the results of agglutinins presence and clinical symptomatology, it is concluded that the animals in this study were infected by leptospira.
