Políticas Culturais em Revista, an electronic publication of the Rede de Estudos em Políticas Culturais put out this call for papers for its first edition of 2022 (v. 15, n. 1) which, in addition to scientific articles and reviews on Cultural Policy and related themes, will feature the following thematic dossier: Guerras culturais: políticas em confronto [Culture Wars: Confronting Policies].

Editors in charge: Pablo Ortellado (USP) and Diogo de Moraes Silva (USP).

“Culture wars” is a term coined by American sociologist James Hunter to refer to worldview conflicts that pit progressives against conservatives and that express themselves in political disputes over moral issues such as women’s emancipation, abortion, gun ownership and drug legalization. Historians usually point to the most immediate genesis of the culture wars in the demands of the new social movements of the 1960s and 1970s (the black movement, the feminist movement, the LGBTQIA+ movement and the counterculture) for changes in interpersonal relationships and, on the other hand, in the conservative reaction against those changes in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

These conflicts over moral guidelines had a great impact on the cultural field, with artistic expressions taking more explicit political stances and protest movements being organized to confront exhibitions and shows, abhorring them. In the wake of these controversies, cultural policies embodying certain values and embracing moral causes were proposed.

With this in mind, we invite interested parties to submit articles, essays, critical reviews and interviews resulting from studies and research that address the contemporary culture wars (i) based on key concepts and theories that can help to understand the phenomenon; (ii) around artistic events and expressions, as well as cultural policies; (iii) in the media; (iv) in educational environments and educational policies; (v) in social movements and human rights policies; (vi) in clashes over family configurations; and (vii) in religious circles.

Notwithstanding other contributions, we list below some topics of interest:

a) What are the characteristics and particularities of the culture wars in Brazil?

b) How have cultural institutions and cultural policies reacted to the outbrake of the culture wars?

c) How have the culture wars impacted recent cultural production?

d) How have the culture wars influenced the symbolic production of the conservative field, its forms of expression and its distribution channels?

e) To what extent are the cultural wars affecting social institutions such as artistic institutions, the media, schools and churches, in order to produce cultural homogeneity?

Receipt of articles: until 12/20/2021, exclusively through the journal's system.

Expected to be published on first semester of 2022.
