The black presence in the interior of São Paulo - Brazil

This paper analyzes the black presence in the interior of São Paulo having as objects of observation and interpretation the municipalities of São Carlos and Americana. To this purpose, it addresses the presence of Africanities in Brazilian history and culture, highlighting the actions taken by the State and national elites to stereotype, marginalize, criminalize and subjugate black populations. It highlights the actions of resistance undertaken by black men and women to guarantee their livelihood and the maintenance of their cultural knowledge. The analyzes are based on an interdisciplinary theoretical framework, which runs through architecture, urbanism, geography and history, and also on data collected through the use of oral history. Finally, it unveils the stories, strategies and memories of black populations commonly hidden.
