The objective of this study was to understand the knowledge, beliefs and feelings of the experience of people with DM. This was a descriptive, qualitative study. For data collection, semi-structured interviews were carried out. The choice of the sample was due to obedience of time and the closure was due to theoretical saturation. In the data analysis, Braun and Clarke's thematic analysis framework was used. The study allowed for a better understanding of the assisted population. The lack of clarity about the disease was evident. The onset of symptoms occurred silently most of the time. Feeding was reported as difficulty, and it was discussed that emotional aspects can interfere with glycemic levels. It was evident that professionals need to develop user-centered care. The team needs to know each person, their restrictions, lifestyle and beliefs to contribute to adherence to treatment.
