A positive relationship between periodontal diseases and the high serum level of C-reactive protein (PCR) it has been suggested, marking that the assessment of this acute phase protein can be a tool of value to identify changes in the periodontal health of patients, particularly in individuals of high risk to develop periodontitis. The objective of this study was to evaluate the levels of PCR in patient with gingivitis and chronic periodontitis and compare them to others periodontaly healthy. 15 patients systemically healthy(42±2,5years) were divided in three groups (gingivitis, periodontitis and control), and submitted to the periodontal and PCR exam. The analysis of the laboratories data didn’t show significant alterations(p>0,05%) in respect to the levels of PCR among the patients, except for a patient in the periodontitis group that owned the worst periodontal condition and presented the higher levels of PCR (0,6mg/dl), however without statistical significance (p=0,18). The results suggest that the high level of PCR in eriodontal patients should be related with the severity of the disease, however an increase in the number of the studied sample should be considered in order to support the statistical value of the found difference.
