The objective of this study was evaluated the sensibility level and accuracy between the urease test and histopathology in different gastric lesions related to colonization by Hp. The samples from gastric mucous membrane (n=240) were collected and used for histopathology (n=138) and urease test (n=102) previously accomplished at two laboratories in Pernambuco, and was selected the patients that had not accomplished treatment for Hp eradication preferentially. For the histopathologic analysis, paraffin blocks were selected containing gastric tissue samples submitted to the histological routine and stained through Giemsa technique. For urease test the gastric samples were collected through the biopsy by routine endoscope. The obtained results indicate that in the urease test were identified 66.6% of positive samples for Hp infection against only 39% obtained through histopathology. The gender from Hp-positive patients about 63.7% and 60% is women, in agreement with the data from test urease and histopathology, respectively. In relation to the age groups through urease test occurred patient Hp-positive in the most advanced age (larger of 51 years old) with range of 42,6% of the studied cases, while in the histopathologic analysis the largest prevalence was found in the patients among 31-45 years old. Although 34 patients have presented negative result for urease test, they presented the identified Hp-positive patients’ same gastric lesions for the histopathology (activate chronic gastritis), what confirms the existence of other factors besides the infection for Hp as results of gastric inflammatory lesions. Thus, those results can conclude that both used tests have effectiveness and certain efficiency to depend on the clinical moment of thepatients with gastric lesions to be investigated.
