Second Language Acquisition and foreign language learning : representation and Interlanguage

Abstract :

This article discusses Second Language Acquisition (SLA) in order to clarify the differences between theories of representation and development, terms and concepts, and to highlight the contributions of this area of research to studies on foreign language learning, based on empirical evidences. From the reading of researches conducted for almost 40 years, a new perspective is proposed here for studies on foreign language learning in Brazil, in the light of hypotheses of generative theory, from a theoretical and experimental approach. The reflection starts from the clarification of the terms and fundamental concepts of the research line, delimiting his terminological and conceptual framework when it refers to the pairs "L1 and L2", "L2 and foreign language", "acquisition and learning" and to the field of research in acquisition of L2. The article then discusses the linguistic innatist hypothesis and phenomena of linguistic transfer, of optionality and of fossilization. To explain what is proposed, it presents an analysis of the acquisition of French as L2 by English-speaking adults. It aims to give visibility to aspects that have not been explored in Brazil yet regarding the representation of the interlanguage in the process of acquisition / learning of a foreign language / second language, in a cognitive perspective, especially that of linguistic innatism hypothesis. This article hopes to contribute to the dissemination of a field of research that can enrich the knowledge of language learning in the context of formal education.
