Abstract

This review analyzes the translation of the dialogues dealing with formality in the novel "Tortuga" by Valerio Evangelisti (2008), translated into Brazilian Portuguese by Michele Vartuli. The novel, set in 1685, tells of the decline of the pirates under the rule of the French king, who suspended his attacks on Spain. The aim of this review is to discuss and analyze the techniques used during the translation process, focusing on the choice of formality and informality marks in Michele Vartuli's translation, through the frequent use of "senhor" as a formal pronoun of address and the use of the pronoun "você" as informal. Furthermore, the book analyzed reiterates the idea that translation is an activity that requires skill and dedication on the part of the translator. Through their deep understanding of both the original language and the target language, the translator demonstrates that their decisions are not simple, but are influenced by their social and cultural experiences and knowledge.
