SOCIAL IMPLICATIONS OF THE NEW PATTERNS OF DEMOGRAPHIC REPRODUCTION IN BAHIA

The paper analyzes the implications for the consolidation of the new patterns of generation succession in Bahia, bearing in mind the reproductive careers, offspring size and composition and household groups under the conjunc-ture of crisis. It also aims at distin-guishing their meanings in terms of social solidarity and protection strategies to the vulnerable family members, woven from the primary networks of sociability, beyond the limits of the household groups. The empirical material was built by crossing the variables of the 1991 and 2000 Census (micro data) and time t and accumulated indicators. One of the major conclusions is that the generalized reduction in the size of offspring, descent and household groups has not resulted into linear relief of pressures, costs and incumbency for maintaining the family, the socialization of their children and the protection to the most vulnerable members for all so-cial segments and groups of generations.

Key words: demographic reproduction, fertility, generation succession, household groups, family.
