RupturES ND CONTINUITIES IN THE INTERGERACIONAL RELATIONSHIPS: the future of the steel workers category in the ABC in São Paulo
Kimi Tomizaki

This paper deals with the intermanagerial relationships of steelworkers in the ABC region in São Paulo. This is a study of the processes of production and transmission of the ways of being and living, of seeing the world, being practiced by this group. The aim of most of the parents is that their children can reach a social status equivalent or higher than theirs. This desire is especially present amongst the parents of the working class, since a reduction in their social status can mean the loss of the workers’ status and their rejection by society. The steelworkers who were interviewed invest on their children’s schooling and at the same time they treasure the vocational qualification, so that they can find a job in the industry. The youths, in turn, cannot identify themselves with their parents’ labor conditions and believe that their stay at the plant will be temporary, which makes the formation of class solidarity ties amongst the members of the second generation difficult, originating conflicts between the two generations.

Key words: worker’s status, intermanagerial relations, car industry, steelworkers, ABC in São Paulo.
