Relationship between anti-retroviral scheme and age of the pediatric patient at the beginning of AIDS´s therapy

Abstract

The goal of this paper was to evaluate if a child’s age at the beginning of the therapy influences the anti-retroviral scheme utilized. A transversal study was performed, utilizing the medical history data and the semi-structured interview script which contained open and closed ended questions. The data analysis was performed in SPSS utilizing a Chi-squared test, mean and standard deviation to assess the child’s age at the beginning of the treatment. It wasn’t possible to identify a relation between the anti-retroviral scheme and the age level of the children. The schemes were utilized in the same proportion, either in the up to five year old children’s group as well as in the group older than five years old. The age at the beginning of the therapy did not determine the choice for a scheme (p-value = 1.00) The professionals involved in the care of patients must be continuously rethinking, discussing and improving the processes involved on the care of an AIDS child.
