The Center for Afro-Asian Studies at the Cândido Mendes University College was the most visible “entrance door” for Africans and those interested in Africa and race relations in Brazil from the 1970s to the 1990s. CEAA published an academic journal of international reference, trained many researchers, held many courses, national and international events, and welcomed the black movement militancy. This story is even more important when the racial issue is on the national political agenda, and the CEAA's peculiar trajectory is a reference for the growing anti-racist militancy among researchers around the network of Nucleus for Afro-Brazilian and Indigenous Studies (NEABIs) in universities from all regions of the country.
